My recovery has had some setbacks, and I'm not doing so great.. For a while I was feeling hopeful that I'd be bouncing back quickly, but it looks instead like it's going to be like I was told to expect: several weeks of pain and discomfort and low energy.

You need to heal. One thing that I learned that was critical was that pain management is about assessing the pain and NOT being all stoic. Being stoic actually works against you. If you let it get out of hand, then you'll find yourself in this round robin of never feeling like the meds are doing their job. Also, I might have bounced back pretty fast, but I also completely and utterly indulged myself for two weeks. I got up to take a shower, piss, and eat dinner. The rest of the time I was either napping or in bed on the Internet. At which point I discovered that, yes, you can spend too much time on the Internet. A revelation, I assure you!

Take time to get better--even if it feels horrible. One thing I learned from numerous bouts of sickness from teaching, it always takes longer to get well than you want, but rushing it means you'll be sicker longer, in the end. Stay in bed and take care of yourself by not taking care of anything else. You'll catch up on everything soon enough--and everyone will make do until you can.
I'm so sorry you're not feeling well. Relax and let your body do its magic work.
